Tuning into group intuition
Tuning into Intuition with Empathic Listening is an exercise that helps trainers enhance their intuitive abilities by focusing on empathic understanding and active listening. This practice allows trainers to access deeper insights into group dynamics and individual needs by tuning into the emotions and unspoken messages conveyed by participants.
To conduct the exercise, pair participants for a focused listening practice. One person shares an experience or challenge for 2-3 minutes while the other listens attentively without interrupting. The listener’s task is to identify the speaker’s underlying emotions and needs without making judgments or offering solutions. After the speaker finishes, the listener reflects back their understanding using phrases like, “I sense you might be feeling [emotion] because you need [underlying need].” This creates a safe space for the speaker while helping the listener practice recognizing intuitive cues.
This exercise strengthens the trainer’s ability to interpret subtle emotional and intuitive signals, fostering trust and deeper connections within groups. By integrating empathic listening into their work, trainers can refine their intuitive responses and adapt their methods to align with the group’s emotional and dynamic needs.
This exercise is derived from Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (NVC) theory, emphasizing empathy and active listening as key tools for communication.
